August 17, 2009 - Back to School at Agassi Prep
625 K-12 students began the 2009-2010 school year
This year, at the High School, Agassi Prep is proud to be offering the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking, receive academic help, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities.
In addition, we are pleased to welcome Bevelyn Smothers as Agassi Prep’s new Middle School Principal. Ms. Smothers has been an educator for the past 25 years. Most recently, she served as Principal of Swainston Middle School, prior to joining Agassi Prep.
Agassi Prep also is implementing a Suzuki Violin program at the Kindergarten level starting this school year. Fifteen students will participate in this highly coveted program, which has had much-publicized research into the connection between classical music training and its effect on cognition and general childhood development.

The Grand Slam for Children presented by Genworth Financial and held at Wynn Las Vegas, brings together international stars – from music to comedy – to build awareness and raise money for our work.
You may remember last year we hosted Lionel Richie, Tim McGraw, Dane Cook, Daughtry, Brian McKnight, Macy Gray, Frank Caliendo, and Charice Pempengco, under the musical direction of David Foster. Performers for the 2010 Grand Slam will be announced soon, but we can assure you, you won’t want to miss it.
